A badge represents some professional milestones. What matters, however, is everything that had to be demonstrated before that badge was awarded.

I am now officially part of the ProZ.com Certified PRO Network in two language pairs: English–Portuguese and Spanish–Portuguese.

For me, this double certification is far more than a new addition to my professional profile. It is independent recognition of the standards I bring to every translation, localization, transcreation, proofreading and linguistic quality assurance project entrusted to me.

What is the ProZ.com Certified PRO Network?

The ProZ.com Certified PRO Network is a community of language professionals who have successfully completed a screening process designed to assess three essential areas: translation ability, business reliability and professional conduct.

This distinction should not be confused with the certification of translations for official or legal purposes, which is governed by the rules applicable in each country. The Certified PRO designation evaluates the translator as a professional: their linguistic competence, reliability and ability to meet recognised professional standards.

Admission is therefore not based merely on purchasing a membership, completing a profile or declaring experience. Applicants must provide evidence that their professional practice meets the requirements of the network.

Being admitted in two separate language pairs means that my professional competence is now recognised for both:

• English to Portuguese translation
• Spanish to Portuguese translation

My target language is European Portuguese, my native language and the language in which I provide final, publication-ready content.

Why this double certification matters to clients

Selecting a freelance translator can be difficult. A polished website or an extensive list of services does not, by itself, prove that someone can understand a complex source text, identify hidden ambiguities, research specialised terminology, preserve meaning and produce natural content for a specific audience.

The ProZ.com Certified PRO screening process gives clients an additional layer of independent professional validation.

For agencies, companies and private clients looking for an English to European Portuguese translator or a Spanish to European Portuguese translator, my double Certified PRO status provides clear evidence that my work and professional practices have been externally assessed.

It confirms something that cannot be measured by fluency alone: professional translation requires judgement.

A translator must understand not only what the original text says, but also what it is trying to achieve, who will read it, where it will be used, and which linguistic or cultural decisions will make it work in the target market.

Translation is not simply replacing words

English, Spanish and Portuguese may share terminology, structures and cultural references, but apparent similarities frequently create some of the most dangerous translation errors.

A phrase can be grammatically correct and still sound foreign. A Spanish term may resemble its Portuguese equivalent while carrying a different meaning (let’s just think of “embarazado” and “embaraçado”…).

An English sentence may be accurately translated but remain unsuitable for a Portuguese interface, marketing campaign, legal document or set of subtitles.

This is why my work goes beyond literal translation.

Depending on the project, my process may include terminology research, source verification, cultural adaptation, consistency checks, comparison with official Portuguese usage, character-limit management, linguistic quality assurance and final review in context.

The objective is not to make the reader notice the translation. The objective is to make the content function naturally and accurately for its Portuguese audience.

My academic and professional background spans several different fields, and that multidisciplinarity has become one of the strongest parts of my work. Technology supports this process, but it does not replace professional responsibility. Translation memories, terminology databases, CAT tools and AI-assisted resources can increase consistency and efficiency; the linguistic decisions, verification and final responsibility remain human.

Two language pairs, one professional standard

Achieving Certified PRO status in both English–Portuguese and Spanish–Portuguese does not change the care I put into my projects. That standard was already there.

What it changes is that clients now have additional, visible and independent confirmation of it.

Every project still requires the same basic commitments: understanding the source, respecting the target audience, researching what needs to be researched, asking questions when something is unclear, protecting confidentiality, meeting agreed deadlines and never delivering work that I would not be prepared to defend as my own.

This double certification marks an important stage in the professional path I have been building through real projects, continuous learning, demanding deadlines, specialist research, and an absolute refusal to treat language as an automatic word-replacement exercise.
